G'day, mate! = common greeting
Hullo = hello
See yas! = good bye!
Ta = Thank you
It's okay or It's alright = You're welcome
Pretty good = delicious (referring to food)
Bloke = a man
Lolly = candy
Boot = trunk (of a car)
Bonnet = hood (of a car)
Mum = mom
Have a yarn = have a chat
Lovely = great
Yank = an American
Footy = a sport resembling Football
Sauce = ketchup
Chips = french fries
Mate = friend
Play bowls = bowling
Indicator = turn signal or blinker (in a car)
Toot = horn
And any word that ends in "ter" is pronounced "duh" (ex. water = waduh) :-)
Oh, and can't forget the craziness of driving on the left side of the road and the driver's seat on the right side of the car and the traffic going the other direction when you cross the street.
It's beautiful here. It reminds us a lot of northern Spain, in the Asturias region. It also looks a lot like the Northwest...green and trees. We've seen kangaroos, wallabies, strange beautiful birds, and magpies. It is Fall here, which we are loving as it is our favorite season. We get two Falls this year!
On Saturday we are leaving for a 9 day road trip through the "outback." It will be mostly desert, mountainous, and beautiful sunsets. The outback is what I imagine Australia to be. We'll post pics soon.
